We hear a lot about how AI is going to lead to mass layoffs. The idea is that artificial intelligence is going to replace humans so well that they will be terminated.

There’s another darker side to AI that most of us don’t talk about: AI making the decision to fire people.

In the United States it would appear that DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency inside the Trump Administration, has been doing precisely that. They’ve been using artificial intelligence to make decisions on who should go without really understanding what those people do or the importance of their role in government.

Even in much smaller organizations, artificial intelligence may be asked to make decisions about the value of somebody’s contributions or may hallucinate information about their productivity.

Who’s to blame if, for example, an AI efficiency program looks at someone and says, “Well, they’re not doing anything?” Human resources and management take that as fact and fire someone because they’re not efficient enough, when in reality AI is simply hallucinating what they’re doing or not doing.

Bad data in performance reviews can and will lead to people losing their jobs without just cause.

Artificial intelligence cannot and should not be trusted with making those kinds of life decisions. It’s frankly no different from AI making the decision that someone has or does not have cancer without any kind of human doctor review.

We have to be very careful to not allow artificial intelligence to simply take over and make decisions for us.

Science fiction literature is filled with situations where we allowed computers and artificial intelligence robots to take over and make decisions for us and left us helpless.

How is your company counteracting the use of AI and the potential for bad data in human resources?
